How to download Instagram Stories before they expire
Instagram Stories are as addictive as ephemeral: they only last 24 hours. If you saw an important Story (an announcement, an interesting Q&A, unique content the creator didn't post to their feed), you have that window to save it. In this guide I'll show you how to download them with ReelSavr and via screen recording when needed.
The 24-hour clock
Important to understand: Stories are temporary content by design. Instagram automatically removes them after 24 hours. Past that:
- They disappear from the creator's public profile
- Only the creator can see them in their archive
- No way to recover them from outside
- NO tool can access expired Stories
If you want to save a Story, do it in the moment.
How to download Stories with ReelSavr
1. Get the Story link
This is a bit trickier than with normal Reels because Instagram doesn't expose Stories with a direct "Copy link" button. Options:
Highlighted Stories (Highlights)
If the Story is saved as a Highlight on the creator's profile, it has a public URL. Open the Highlight, look for the Share icon (paper plane) and pick Copy link.
Story with mention or link sticker
If the Story has an active sticker (link, mention, hashtag), you can copy the URL from the browser after tapping. That URL points to the Story.
Direct Story from the feed
Sometimes Instagram lets you generate a Story link via "Share → Copy link". Not all creators have this option active.
2. Paste it in ReelSavr
Go to reelsavr.net, paste the link and tap Search video. If the Story is accessible, you'll see download options.
3. Pick quality and download
Stories tend to be lower quality than Reels:
- 720p HD: typical max quality
- 480p SD: if the creator used a worse camera
- Audio MP3: if you only want audio
Plan B: screen recording
If the Story has no public URL or ReelSavr can't access it, screen recording ALWAYS works because you capture what you see.
iPhone
- Settings → Control Center → add "Screen Recording"
- Open Instagram and load the Story
- Swipe Control Center and tap the red record button
- Watch the full Story (5-15 seconds each slide)
- Stop recording
- The video saves to Photos. Trim to keep just the Story
Android
- Pull down quick panel and find "Screen recorder"
- Start recording, open Instagram
- Play the Story
- Stop recording
- The video saves to Gallery
PC
On PC, open instagram.com and use:
- Windows: Win+G opens the game recorder (also records browser)
- Mac: Cmd+Shift+5 opens native screen recording
- OBS Studio (free, all systems): for more pro recording
Does the creator find out?
Common question. Clear answer:
- Instagram shows the creator who viewed the Story (viewer list)
- Instagram does NOT notify them if you screen-recorded
- Instagram does NOT notify them if you downloaded externally
Unlike Snapchat (which has notified screenshots for years), Instagram never implemented that feature for normal Stories.
Special cases
Stories with music
When you download a Story with Instagram music, the audio comes included. If the creator used copyrighted music (Spotify, etc.), that music is in your download. For personal use, no problem.
Stories with interactive stickers
Stickers (polls, questions, quizzes) appear as visual elements in the video but are NOT interactive in the download. You'll see the sticker but can't respond in the downloaded file.
Stories from accounts you follow
If the account is public, their Stories should be accessible. If private and you're a follower, you can see them in the app but we CAN'T process them — Instagram doesn't expose those Stories to public URLs.
Stories with links (link sticker)
Stories with a link sticker open an external URL when tapped. That URL is not the video — it's the link destination. To download the video, use the normal methods.
Highlights: the exception
Highlights are Stories the creator decided to keep permanently on their profile. These CAN be easily downloaded with ReelSavr — they don't expire.
If you want to guarantee a Story stays available, the creator can archive it as a Highlight. From there, downloading is trivial.
Legal limits
- Personal use: downloading Stories for your archive = OK
- Commercial reposting: uploading the Story as your own = NO
- Ads: using the Story in ads without permission = NO
- Defamation or harassment: using a Story to attack the creator = ILLEGAL
To use a Story outside personal use, the right thing is to ask the creator for permission.
Frequently asked questions
How long do Instagram Stories last?
24 hours. After that they disappear from the public feed and only the creator can see them in their personal archive.
Does the creator know if I download their Story?
Instagram shows the creator who VIEWED the Story (viewer list). It does NOT notify them if you screen-recorded or downloaded with an external tool.
Does it work with private accounts' Stories?
No. If the account is private and only approved followers can see Stories, we can't process them.
What if the Story has music?
The video downloads with its original audio as-is. If the creator added a copyrighted song, that audio is in the file.
